Hammond Elementary's
"So This is Opera"

As part of the Cultural Arts Program, we are very excited to announce that Yvette Lewis will be visiting Hammond Elementary School.  Mrs. Lewis' program, "So This is Opera", is a fun, child-friendly approach to an area of music education that is not usually part of the elementary school curriculum.  During the week of October 8th through October 12th, Kindergarten through 5th grade students will gain an understanding and appreciation for opera through this multifaceted program.  In addition to singing various excerpts and arias from their assigned operas, students will study the relationship between opera and other art forms such as painting, design, storytelling, creative writing and poetry.

Mrs. Lewis wants to stress to Hammond parents that she will be introducing operas in an age appropriate manner for children.  She asks that parents familiar with specific operas not digress from her version, as it will be confusing to the children.

At the end of the week, on October 12th, the children will be performing a concert for the entire Hammond community.  The performance will be held at 7:00pm in the Hammond Middle School gym.

Don't miss this fantastic evening of music!!!

Mrs. Armstrong has asked for volunteers to assist with the children.  Volunteer assistance will be necessary in the following areas:

  • Volunteers who will be willing to assist with students in their staging areas during the Friday night performance.  The schedule will be set up so that you will be able to see your child(ren) perform.

  • Volunteers who will be willing to assist in the art room during the week of the residency.

  • Volunteers who will be willing to assist with decorating the cafeteria with the student's artwork.  This will take place after school on Friday.

  • Volunteers who will be willing to assist with the reception following the evening performance.

If you are able to assist, please contact Mrs. Isailovic at (301) 317-1091 or email kisailovic@msn.com.
