Health Information and Safe-to-School Program

Safe-to-School Attendance Hotline: (301) 725-9250

H1N1 Update
Parents are encouraged to refrain from sending students to school if they have flu like symptoms, which include a fever, cough and or sore throat. Students should not return to school until they are symptom and medicine free for 24 hours. A fever is defined as 100°F or 37.8°C. The Howard County Public Health Department provided these guidelines.

Change in Reporting Student Illness
This school year, schools are being asked to collect more information about student illnesses.  As part of the Health Department's tracking of Influenza Like Illness in Howard County, schools are required to report numbers of student illnesses and symptoms.

If your child is absent from school, please contact the school using the Hammond Attendance Hotline (301) 725-9250 or send an email to hesabsence@hcpss.org on the first day of the absence and provide the following information:

  1. Your child's name
  2. The date
  3. Symptoms of influenza like illness: (i.e. fever greater than 100 degrees F, cough, sore throat)

An absence note is still required for every absence within 24 hours of the child returning to school.

* Students must be fever free without medication for 24 hours
before returning to school.

The PTA Sponsored SAFE-TO-SCHOOL program ensures that all our children are accounted for each day. If your child will be absent or late (sick, doctor's appointment, etc), we ask that you call the Hammond Attendance Hotline (301) 725-9250 by 9:30 am and leave a message. Leave the date, your child's name, teacher, grade, why they are absent and when you expect them back in school.

In addition to calling the SAFE-TO-SCHOOL HOTLINE, you MUST SEND A NOTE regarding your child's absence the first day of their return to school. If a note is not received within two days of your child's absence they will be marked unlawful or truant.

The Safe-to-School program desperately needs your help to ensure that all of our children arrive "safe to school."  We have a chairperson to coordinate scheduling; now we need a few folks willing to give only 15-20 minutes of time around 9:30-9:45am; when you can spare it. Whether it's once a week, once a month, once a quarter, or one week straight and done, whatever time you choose you give will help a valuable program protect our kids. Scheduling options are flexible.  Any help is appreciated.
