MRS. BLAND IS RETIRING!
Mrs. Bland has announced she is retiring after so many years of dedication to our children and the HES staff. We are sad to see her go, but are looking forward to celebrating with her. The HES staff is organizing a celebratory brunch in honor of Mrs. Bland. The brunch will take place at the Sheraton in Columbia. The cost is $45/person and includes a gift for Mrs. Bland. Click here for details on attending the brunch.
If you are not able to attend the brunch, but would like to contribute to a gift for Mrs. Bland, the PTA is collecting donations from families who would like to donate. Please send in your donation to your child's homeroom teacher in an envelope marked PTA GIFT no later than Friday, May 24. Attending the brunch or contributing to a gift is completely voluntary. Please contact Lisa Takeuchi (lbtakeuchi@gmail.com) if you have any questions.

GREEN SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Dear Hammond Community,
The Fourth Grade Green Team has a job to reduce, reuse and recycle. To reuse, we are planning to make a mural out of plastic bottle caps to display in our school. So we need milk caps, orange juice caps, plastic water bottle caps and even peanut butter caps! Those are just some examples. We can't do it alone. We need your help! We need a lot of bottle caps to do this. We ask that you bring in bottle caps or send them to school with your child. Remember the caps can be any different print, color and shape. There will be a collection bin in your child's grade pod. The Fourth Grade Green Team would like to thank you for your generosity and can't wait to get started on this special project.
Sincerely,
The Fourth Grade Green Team
WASTE FREE WEDNESDAYS
Thank you very much to all the volunteers who have come in on Wednesdays and made this event possible! Additional days have been added to volunteer for Waste-Free Wednesdays! We appreciate all of your efforts!
Check out the Sign Up Genius below for details.
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A4EABAC29A64-wastefree
Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Oswald are working on new, exciting and interactive ways our school can become more green and they need our help.
- Waste-Free Wednesdays: need one or two volunteers (alternating) to come to the cafeteria at around 2:15 on Wednesday and with the help of a student, weigh the trash that was thrown away during the lunch periods that day. It will be a contest between each grade. The grade with trash weighing the least wins a "trophy" for their pod that week. The trophy will roam from pod to pod all year.
It will be a lot of fun and a great way to teach the students about the importance of recycling! We look forward to working with you!
