BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT 2007

Please mark your calendar and be sure to attend Back To School Night. Monday, September 10th will be for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade.  Tuesday, September 11th will be for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Back To School night will start at 7pm on Monday and Tuesday with a general overview of the GT program starting at 6pm on Tuesday.

OVERVIEW OF THE GT MATH PROGRAM FOR GRADES 4 & 5

This curriculum overview is for parents of students currently enrolled in the GT math program for grades 4 and 5.  The meeting will take place on Thursday, September 20th at 6:00 pm in the Media Center. 

News from the Music Department

RECORDERS:  All 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students play recorders in general music.  If your child does not have a recorder, you may elect to purchase one at your local music store, or you may opt to send a check or cash in the amount of $7.00 to school and Mrs. Armstrong will provide your child with a recorder.
4th & 5th GRADE CHORUS:  Students in the 4th & 5th grade are currently signing up for chorus.  Permission forms were sent home last Thursday.  Make sure you return them as soon as possible to participate in this very exciting group!!

HOWARD COUNTY CHILDREN’S CHORUS
Auditions for the Howard County Children’s Chorus will be held soon.  This exciting county chorus is made up of students from all 38 Howard County elementary schools.  Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:30 at Northfield Elementary school.  If you would like your child to audition, please contact Mrs. Armstrong.

JOIN THE PTA!

Please turn in your PTA Membership Form before Thursday, September 13th and your family will be entered into a drawing to win a custom embroidered Hammond Elementary School blanket. The winner will be announced on Friday!  There’s more… the grade with the most memberships will get cool Tuffy Paw Print Tattoos during Spirit Week!
So, do it now, fill out the short form, attach payment and send it to school. It’s that easy!

A FREE CONCERT FOR KIDS!!!

Please join the Columbia Concert Band, under the direction of Howard County Music Teacher Michael Blackman, for its annual Children’s Concert on Sunday, September 16th. This FREE performance will take place at 3pm at River Hill High School. The program has a “Broadway” theme, and will include some wonderful selections from famous musicals, including the stage version of “The Lion King.” Students will have an opportunity to “meet” the instruments, and performers will be available to chat after the concert. Family Night is Back

Please mark your calendar for Thursday, September 27th and come to Three Brothers Italian Restaurant to help raise money for our school PTA.  Enjoy tasty Italian cuisine with your family and friends between 4pm and 10pm.  “Three Brothers” will donate 20% of your purchase to the Hammond Elementary PTA.  The restaurant is located on Deepage Drive near the corner of Carved Stone and Snowden River Parkway in Columbia.  Look for the Family Night flyer coming home soon. Also, look for upcoming Family Nights at Fuddruckers, Chick-fil-A and Cheeburger-Cheeburger.  If you would like to make any suggestions for new locations, feel free to contact Amy Shugar at sheashug@comcast.net.

Cub Scout Recruiting Night

Are you looking for great family activities for you and your son? Do you want to teach your son sound citizenship practices and strong character? If so, the Cub Scouts is for you. Pack 606, sponsored by the Cub Scouts Parents Booster out of Hammond Elementary School will be holding an information night on September 17th at 7pm in the HES school cafeteria. CHANGE IN LUNCH PRICES!

There has been a change in lunch price for the 07-08 school year. The price for elementary students is $2.25, milk prices will stay the same at .50 cents.

DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

The Salvation Army is taking applications for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance.  The program is designed to provide gifts for children ages 0 – 12 and food for the entire family.  
Applications will be taken at The Salvation Army Howard County Service Center, 10005 Old Columbia Road, Suite P-170, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday, September 10 -Friday, September 14, 2007.  There will be extended hours on Wednesday, September 12th  until 8:00 p.m.
YOU MUST BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO APPLY:
•  Valid “Maryland “ photo I.D. for ALL adults
•  Social Security cards (for all household members)
•  Birth Certificates for all children 0 – 17
•  Proof of all income (pay stubs/DSS/SSA/Child Support, Food Stamp Letter)
•  Proof of all expenses (current utilities (electric, gas, oil, water), car payment, car
   insurance, phone, childcare, cable, etc.)
•  Proof of residence (Section 8, Public Housing, HUD, lease, mortgage)
•  VERY IMPORTANT:  If on Section 8, Public Housing or HUD – you must provide  
    the following: (paper that includes the break down of your family members & monthly
    rent).
YOU MUST HAVE ALL INFORMATION TO FILL OUT AN APPLICATION!
