MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT ORIENTATION
Incoming 6th grade Parent Orientation will be Wednesday,
May 21ST at 6:30pm in the Hammond Middle School cafeteria. All
incoming parents are welcome to attend and receive information for their
child's sixth grade year at Hammond Middle. Incoming students do not need
to attend because they visited our
school and received all necessary infomation on Friday, May 2nd .
FIELD DAY INFORMATION & VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
REMINDER: FIELD DAY IS WEDNESDAY
MAY 21ST. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILDREN ARE DRESSED IN
COMFORTABLE, APPROPRIATE CLOTHING. PLEASE REMEMBER TO PUT SUNSCREEN ON
YOUR CHILD THAT DAY. ALSO YOUR CHILD MAY BRING IN THEIR OWN WATER BOTTLE
(MAKE SURE TO HAVE IT LABELED SO IT DOES NOT GET LOST). Mr. Pfeffer and
Ms. McCulloch still need volunteers for Field Day (May
21st) Times are 9:30-11:45 , 12:30-2:45, or ALL DAY. THANK YOU FOR
VOLUNTEERING!
HES PTA/Scaggsville Fire Station #11 Reading Incentive Program
Each month, students who read 20 minutes beyond their daily reading time
are eligible to fill out a reading coupon and turn it in for a drawing.
Our winners for the May
20th ride are: Kindergarten; Donovan Downie, 1st grade; Christina
Yang, 2nd grade; Tommy Tucker, 3rd grade; Declan Downie, 5th grade; Joey
Janush. Congratulations students!
BUS INFORMATION
A bus video surveillance system may be in operation to help monitor
student behavior on Howard County Public School buses. Bus safety is a top
priority and bus drivers may not be able to watch the road and closely
monitor students at the same time.
FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
We have a new book in our Parent Lending Library. It is called “The
Worried Child” and is helpful for recognizing anxiety in children and
helping them heal.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION FOR STUDENTS
The Howard County PTA Council has once again joined in a partnership with
the Prepare for Success program. This program is a community-sponsored
venture of many groups in Howard County to provide students in need with
the basic school supplies. Hammond Elementary, along with many other
schools in the county, will be participating in this program. If you would
like to make a donation of the following school supplies, please send them
in anytime from May
19-28th . A collection box will be in the front hallway. Please
label all donations "Prepare for Success." SUPPLIES NEEDED:
3-ring Binders, 24 pack Crayons, 8-pack Large Crayons, Highlighters,
Zipper Supply Pouches, 12" Rulers, Pencil Boxes, 3-hole Lined Paper,
Folders (2 pocket), Marble Composition Books, Pink Erasers, Glue Sticks,
Blunt Scissors, Dividers(5-tab).
CARNIVAL CAKE WALK IS BACK!!
Bring in a cake or other wonderful delight to the carnival and you might
find yourself at the Maryland Terrapin Football Season Opener on
August 30th! You can enter your name 3 times if you bring in 3
cakes - it's that simple. Please contact Rachel Janush at 240-568-0575

and let her know how many cakes you can bring! See you on
May 30th at the carnival.
HES PTA CARNIVAL FOOD DRIVE CONTEST
We have collected 1,345 food items so far for LARS (Laurel Advocacy and
Referral Services) in the Carnival Food Drive Contest—thank you for your
generosity. The grade that donates the most non-perishable food items by May
23rd will win a Popsicle Party with Mr. Vanisko! So far, the 4th
grade is still in the lead with 530 items collected. First grade has
pulled into second place with 235 items. Kindergarten is in third with 165
items. Tied for fourth are the 2nd and 5th grades with 148 items each.
Last, but certainly not least, is the third grade with 119 items. There is
still 1 week to go—keep those donations coming in! What to donate:
canned foods (with pop-tops if possible), microwavable kids meals,
spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, rice,
paper products, diapers, baby formula, baby food.

CARNIVAL
The Spring Carnival Planning Committee is extremely grateful to all the
Hammond Families who have volunteered to staff the Carnival.
With your support we will be able to stage a great Carnival event this
year. Volunteer staffing assignments will be posted by May
23rd on the PTA Bulletin Board and at www.hespta.org/spring-carnival.html.

J & P Venue Back by Popular Demand!
We will be having our final “Family Night” fundraiser for this school
year on
Tuesday, June 3rd at New
York J&P Pizza. Let's make it our most successful “Family
Night” of the year! Bring your family & friends between 4pm and 9pm
and enjoy tasty Italian cuisine. 10% of all sales between 4pm and 9pm
will be donated to the Hammond Elementary PTA, so spread the word and see
you there. Look for the “Family Night” flyers coming home soon!
2008 STARTALK Summer Language Program for Middle School Students
The Chinese Language School of Columbia(CLSC) in collaboration with the Washington
Metropolitan Association of Chinese Schools will sponsor an innovative
summer program to jump-start Chinese language skills for
non-Chinese-speaking students. You also will experience cultural
activities such as lion-dance, Chinese Yo-Yo, and Chinese calligraphy. The
camp site will be at Burleigh
Manor Middle School from June
30 to July 25th (4 weeks), Monday-Friday:
8:15am-11:45am. The cost of the program is $200 per student. Any
interested students in grades 6-9 for school year 08-09 are welcome to

RESEVOIR HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CAMP
The Reservoir High School Booster Club is excited to offer Football Summer
Sports Camp instruction. Players will improve their technical and tactical
drills in an encouraging, educational, and positive environment. The
emphasis is on developing important fundamentals through many individual
and fun skill activities, challenging games, and small-sided scrimmages.
The maximum player-to-coach ratio is 10:1. Participants will be grouped
according to age and ability. A certified trainer will be on the premises
at all times. The camps are limited to existing 5th-8th graders.
